Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a serious health problem with continuously increasing rates of incidence and mortality. Diabetes mellitus is characterized by elevated plasma glucose concentrations resulting from insufficient insulin and insulin resistance, or both, leading to metabolic abnormalities in carbohydrates, lipids and proteins. If not cured or controlled it may even lead to acute or chronic complications causing ketoacidosis, microangiopathy and other related infections. Our Vedic literatures like Charak Samhita already report the use of plants, herbs and their derivatives for treatment of diabetes mellitus. More than 400 plants have been incorporated in approximately 700 recipes which are used to treat diabetes mellitus in almost two thirds of the world population. The present paper is an attempt to enlist the contribution enlist the contribution of the Indian Indigenous medicinal plants with anti the Indian Indigenous medicinal plants with anti-diabetic and related beneficial effects.
